A Memphis tradition since 1976 La Baguette is a family owned and operated bakery and café offering authentic French breads, pastries, and desserts made with the finest and freshest of ingredients. Our breakfast and lunch recipes are unique to La Baguette, and all are family-tested and approved! Paul and Ruth Howse purchased the bakery with the dream of bringing a little taste of France to Memphis. Ruth was a Mississippi girl with a love of all things French, and she studied at the Cordon Bleu and La Varenne Cooking Schools in Paris after she and Paul married in 1952. A student of both Julia Child and Jacques Pepin, Ruth shared her love of French cooking with her own students here in the Mid-South for many years.
Paul and Ruth worked with French pastry chefs on the original recipes, and those recipes are the ones you will find on display today, enhanced by the expertise of many dedicated La Baguette employees over the years. An inspiration to all at La Baguette, Ruth passed away in 1998. Her family has continued her tradition of warmth, friendliness, and delicious food. Gene Amagliani, Ruth’s son-in-law, is the family member currently running the bakery with an amazing staff – some of whom have been there 20 years or more. A longtime local favorite, with a loyal clientele, La Baguette has been in the same East Memphis location since the beginning. In the heart of Memphis, right along Poplar Avenue, the bakery/café is perfectly situated for friends to pop in on their way to and from one part of town to another.
The indoor courtyard is a charming place to have lunch or breakfast, and a to go menu offers the same items for an easy pick up. Of course, no meal is complete without a dessert! Our petit fours, tarts, Napoleons, almond croissants, cookies, and other confections are a culinary delight you will not want to miss. We invite you to walk through our doors and let the sweet smell of sugar, spice, almonds, and cream wash over you. Take a look in our bakery case, and select some goodies to take home to share. Don’t forget the bread – no meal is complete without a freshly baked loaf, soft rolls, or one of our famous baguettes. Wander over to the café and enjoy a filling, delicious lunch in our indoor courtyard. We are glad you’ve come, and we hope you will make a regular visit to La Baguette a part of your lives!

La Baguette Praise

As a part of the Memphis community, La Baguette has been mentioned numerous times in the local press. We’re often mentioned in the our city’s biggest paper, The Commercial Appeal – spotlighted as a “Best Bet” for our Palmiers in 2010, our Yule Logs in 2012, our King Cakes in 2015, and quoted in a 1984 article about the craze in croissants! We’ve also gotten a thumbs-up for our lunches – “Great Sandwiches Around Town, A to Z” – in 2014. Whenever you read about us in the papers, you’ll learn about the amazing food we have to offer, but to get the true feeling of La Baguette, we invite you to stop by and discover for yourself what makes this such a special place to so many.
